Background Information:

Public Chapter 991 was enacted during the last legislative session and amended/changed the dates for which a child must be five-years-old to enroll in kindergarten.  Beginning with the 2013 – 2014 school year, a child must be five (5) on or before August 31st, and beginning with the 2014 – 2015 school year and all years thereafter, a child must be five (5) on or before August 15th.  As per state statute and this policy, parents of students who will turn five (5) on or before the prior cutoff date of September 30th may request that their child be enrolled. The Board's current policy is attached for reference purposes.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the amendment to Board Policy #6.201 – Compulsory Attendance Ages, on first reading.
